Our Company

Tropical American Timber is an importer of beautiful, handpicked wood slabs from Central America, and a producer of custom slab tables here in Gainesville, FL.

We specialize in Monkeypod and Parota live edge wood slabs, along with a rotating inventory of exotic wood species: Teak, Brazilian Cherry, Purpleheart, Bubinga, Meranti, Espavel, and Pochote, to name a few. We also stock a variety of domestic hardwoods, including White Oak, Live Oak, Black Walnut, and Cherry.

Owner and co founder, Calvin DiNicolo has a background in architecture, design, and fabrication, while co founder Anthony Traina spent years studying and working in the tropical rain forests of Central and South America. The connections and experience that Anthony developed abroad is what allows us to provide the truly one-of-a-kind forest products that we import.

  I have to give a huge thanks to Calvin for the incredible work he did on the monkey pod countertop at our mid-century Lake House. We went into this project together with a beautiful piece of wood, a vision, and honestly—not much of a plan. 😂 We figured it out as we went, and Calvin came through with a true piece of art that is the centerpiece of our new home. The craftsmanship, attention to detail, patience, communication, and ability to take an idea and turn it into something better than I had imagined were incredible. Calvin absolutely crushed it in every way. It’s one of those pieces that makes you stop and look at it every time you walk into the room, and I know it’s going to be a centerpiece of this house for years to come. Thank you, Calvin.   Beautiful assortment of large and exotic slabs, but what really stood out to me was the exceptional customer service. Calvin’s expertise and creativity are evident in the work displayed, as well as in the pieces I saw him working on while I was there in the shop. He took the time to help me find the right type of wood for a much smaller project I was working on (a weather-resistant slab for mounting a staghorn fern). Even though Tropical American Timber typically works on much larger and more expensive projects, I was treated with the same attention and care. I never once felt like my project was too small to be worth their time. Calvin listened to what I was looking for, offered helpful guidance, and helped me find exactly what I needed. This is clearly a well-run small business that takes pride in both its craftsmanship and its customers. I would absolutely recommend Tropical American Timber to anyone looking for a unique, high-quality piece of wood and a team that will take the time to listen to and help bring your vision to life.

  Had a great experience here. Calvin was incredibly helpful from start to finish, super knowledgeable, patient, and just easy to work with. He took the time to answer all our questions and didn’t rush us at all while we were picking out a slab. The selection is honestly impressive. We were able to find exactly what we were looking for, and the piece we ended up with was perfect for our project.   If you have the need for a natural wood countertop table or other decorative device. You would be a fool to NOT to hire Calvin from tropical American timber.  He is the craftsman beyond All craftsman, he built a very, very large island countertop for me from two different monkey pod slabs, and had to work from drawings and specifications and build cut outs around sinks and cooktops, and he got it within less than an eighth of an inch—- amazing!!!! His shop is 1500 miles away from my home. The level of detail is unbelievable, I took a leap of faith, sending a substantial deposit early on and hiring someone I never met, and I could not be more thrilled with the results.  If you have the need for the product he is offering you need to hire him.  He is honest capable, and will get the job done and exceed your expectations. If you need to contact me, please do.
